Google Camera update to bring new UI, fix a bug plaguing Pixel devices

The line of Google Pixel devices is known to have some of the best smartphone cameras on the market thanks to a combination of high-end hardware and Google’s software enhancements. That doesn’t mean the devices are flawless though, and the next update — Google Camera 7.0 — looks like it will fix some of the issues people are currently having.

Some of the previous camera issues have already been addressed, but XDA Developers spotted a bug report that shows Google is now focusing on updating the UI and increasing the camera app’s overall performance. Google wants to address this issue quickly so they don’t continue to lose customer trust.

Apparently, some Pixel users have noticed as much as a 10-second delay from the time the camera app is launched to the time it is usable. Fixing this slow launch time appears to be the Google Camera team’s first priority right now. This issue can be a huge let down for people trying to catch a video or picture as quickly as possible.

Issues like this require large cross-team collaboration between the Google Camera, Android system, and Android performance teams, so it is nice to see Google take the time to fix this bug. The bug report also revealed other Android 10 updates in the works for Pixel devices.

It looks like Google will be releasing a new screen recording app called Recall and adding “Rules” settings functionality to its devices. Recall builds on the Pixel devices’ current barebones screen recording functionality, and Rules allows the device to change settings preferences when certain parameters are met like connecting to specific WiFi networks or entering a certain location.

The Google Pixel 4 is set to launch next month, and it should come preloaded with Google Camera 7.0. Hopefully, we will see the camera delay bug fixed in the 7.0 update so the new Pixel device won’t launch with these issues.
